Volgograd residents are at risk of meningitis and paralysis due to mosquitoes

Residents of the Volgograd region were reminded of the deadly danger of ordinary mosquitoes. There is a natural focus of West Nile fever on the territory of the region, which is transmitted by blood-sucking insects. As reported by the “City News” in the Department of Consumer Supervision in the Volgograd region, since 1999, more than 1,000 people have fallen ill in the subject, and in 2023, 18 cases of fever were registered. As of July 15, no cases of infection among the population of the region have been registered.

A patient with West Nile fever develops symptoms of general intoxication. In severe cases (1-5%) damage to the central nervous system occurs. The incubation period is usually 2 to 6 days. In most cases, the infection is mild, but the prevention of this disease deserves special attention due to the possibility of developing encephalitis, meningitis, acute flaccid paralysis, as well as death.
